A practical FinOps playbook: visibility, tagging, rightsizing, commitments, automation and governance to reduce cloud spend.
Cloud bills tend to grow faster than expected. FinOps brings finance, engineering and business together to manage cloud spend as a shared responsibility, without slowing teams down.
1. Get visibility
Use native tools such as Azure Cost Management, AWS Cost Explorer or Google Cloud Billing reports. Enforce consistent tagging by team, application and environment so costs can be allocated.
2. Eliminate waste
- Delete unattached disks, idle load balancers and forgotten test environments.
- Shut down non-production resources outside working hours.
- Review storage tiers and data retention.
3. Rightsize
Compare provisioned capacity with actual utilization and resize virtual machines, databases and containers accordingly.
4. Use commitments wisely
Reserved instances and savings plans reduce rates for steady workloads. Commit only to what you are confident will run, and review coverage regularly.
5. Architect for efficiency
Autoscaling, serverless and managed services can cut both cost and operations effort when they fit the workload.
6. Govern
- Set budgets and alerts per team.
- Review spend in a regular cadence.
- Track unit economics such as cost per customer or per transaction.
Savings depend on your environment, so measure before and after. Our managed cloud services include cost reporting and optimization, and our Azure and AWS consultants can review your spend.
