Azure vs AWS vs Google Cloud: How to Choose the Right Cloud Provider

How to choose between Azure, AWS and Google Cloud based on your workloads, skills, compliance needs and budget.

There is no universally best cloud. The right choice depends on your workloads, your team and your goals. Here is a vendor-neutral way to decide.

1. Start with your existing footprint

Organizations already invested in Microsoft 365, Active Directory and Windows Server often find Azure the natural fit because of identity integration and licensing benefits. Teams with strong Linux, open-source and startup-style engineering practices frequently choose AWS for its breadth of services. Data and machine-learning heavy teams often evaluate Google Cloud for its analytics and AI tooling.

2. Compare what actually matters

  • Workload fit: databases, containers, serverless, analytics, AI services.
  • Skills: the platform your engineers already know reduces cost and risk.
  • Compliance and regions: data residency and certifications available in the regions you need.
  • Pricing model: reserved capacity, savings plans, egress charges and support plans.
  • Ecosystem: marketplace, partners and tooling you depend on.

3. Consider multi-cloud carefully

Multi-cloud can reduce lock-in and meet specific needs, but it adds complexity in security, networking and skills. Many organizations are better served by one primary cloud, with a second used deliberately for a specific capability.

4. Pilot before committing

Run a small proof of concept on your shortlist: measure performance, cost and operational effort rather than relying on feature checklists.

A simple decision framework

  1. List top five workloads and their requirements.
  2. Score each provider against workload fit, skills, compliance and cost.
  3. Pilot the leader and validate with real data.
  4. Document the decision and governance model.
