A practical 12-step Azure migration checklist covering discovery, landing zone design, security, cutover and cost optimization.
Moving workloads to Microsoft Azure is one of the highest-impact IT projects an organization can run, and one of the easiest to get wrong. This checklist walks through the steps that separate a smooth Azure migration from an expensive one.
Phase 1: Prepare
- Define business goals. Cost reduction, resilience, speed and compliance each lead to different architecture choices.
- Discover and inventory. Map servers, applications, databases, dependencies and data volumes. Tools such as Azure Migrate help, but interviews with application owners fill the gaps.
- Classify workloads. For each one choose a strategy: rehost, replatform, refactor, retire or retain.
- Check compliance needs. Data residency, HIPAA, ISO 27001 or SOC 2 requirements shape region and control choices.
Phase 2: Build the foundation
- Design an Azure landing zone. Subscriptions, management groups, networking, identity and policy are far easier to set up before workloads arrive.
- Secure identity first. Use Microsoft Entra ID with MFA, Conditional Access and least-privilege roles.
- Plan networking. Hub-and-spoke topology, private endpoints, DNS and hybrid connectivity (VPN or ExpressRoute).
- Turn on logging and monitoring from day one: Azure Monitor, Log Analytics and Microsoft Defender for Cloud.
Phase 3: Migrate
- Pilot first. Migrate a low-risk workload to validate the process, performance and rollback plan.
- Migrate in waves grouped by dependency, with clear cutover windows and communication plans.
- Test thoroughly. Functional, performance, security and failover tests before decommissioning anything.
Phase 4: Optimize
- Right-size and govern costs. Use budgets, tagging, reservations and regular reviews so savings are real and lasting.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Lifting everything as-is without reviewing licensing and sizing.
- Skipping the landing zone and fixing governance later.
- Treating security as a post-migration task.
