A step-by-step ISO 27001 roadmap covering scope, risk assessment, Annex A controls, internal audit and the certification audit.
ISO/IEC 27001 is the international standard for an information security management system (ISMS). Certification signals mature security to customers worldwide.
What the standard requires
ISO 27001 combines management clauses (context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement) with Annex A controls. The 2022 edition organizes 93 controls into organizational, people, physical and technological themes.
Roadmap
- Secure leadership commitment and define objectives.
- Define ISMS scope and interested parties.
- Assess risks using a consistent method, then choose a treatment for each.
- Select controls and document them in the Statement of Applicability.
- Implement controls and policies, with training and awareness.
- Operate and measure. Monitor, log and review.
- Conduct an internal audit and a management review.
- Certification audit. An accredited certification body performs a Stage 1 documentation review and a Stage 2 implementation audit.
- Maintain. Surveillance audits and continual improvement follow.
Tips for success
- Keep scope focused to start.
- Reuse existing controls and processes.
- Make the ISMS part of daily operations, not a document exercise.
